What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds produced in laboratories using advanced technology that replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the Earth. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, physical properties, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds. Like natural diamonds, they are composed of pure carbon arranged in a cubic crystal lattice and have a hardness of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making them the hardest known natural material.
The primary difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is their origin. Natural diamonds form over billions of years under intense heat and pressure beneath the Earth’s surface. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments using one of two established methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), which recreates the conditions found deep within the Earth, or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), which grows diamond crystals from carbon-rich gases. Both processes produce genuine diamonds rather than imitations.
Because they are real diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can be cut, polished, graded, and certified using the same standards applied to natural diamonds. In most cases, they cannot be distinguished from natural diamonds by the naked eye and require specialized gemological equipment for identification.
Lab-grown diamonds should not be confused with diamond simulants such as moissanite or cubic zirconia (CZ). Although simulants may resemble diamonds in appearance, they have different chemical compositions, optical properties, and levels of hardness. They are not diamonds and are classified as separate gemstone materials.
